We arrive at the RSPCA cattery in Ashford Kent at around 2pm and pretty soon Merry and Samwise are 'boxed up' and ready to go. Merry is being extremely vocal about his carry basket. He ain't a happy bunny! Samwise, meanwhile, is being very quiet. We're not fooled by his apparent bravery though; particularly since he sports the same worried look he had last week when we first met him.
Merry calms down around 15 minutes into the journey and by the time we arrive home, both cats are snoozing.
For the first two hours we sit with them in the conservatory, watching them nervously step out into their new life. Merry is quick to explore all the nooks and crannies. Samwise is nervous and jumpy. Thank goodness for the igloo we bought, which Samwise seems to like hiding in.
Merry totally ignores the scratching post we bought this morning and proceeds to sharpen his claws on the doormat. Ah well, you win some you lose some.
At suppertime, Merry wolfs his food down, but Samwise doesn't even look at his. We have to remove his bowl before Merry empties it and makes himself sick.
The Boy worries all evening that Samwise is going to starve. He eventually takes Merry into the kitchen so that Samwise can be left alone with his food. Hopefully this will give Samwise the chance to pluck up some courage to eat in his own time. It works. Result! The Boy can sleep soundly tonight knowing that Samwise isn't going hungry.
I don't think it will take Merry long to find his feet. Sam, on the other hand, is going to need some time.
